So Many Methods to Prevent PP-PTSD


Did you know there are several ways to prevent PP-PTSD? Some of them can take place before pregnancy, others during pregnancy, some shortly after birth, and others during the first year following birth.

In this video, I discuss several ways to prevent PP-PTSD from occurring...because it's much easier to prevent than to treat after the fact.

Here is the general outline of various approaches to prevention. 

  • Good mental health before pregnancy
    • Depression treated
    • Anxiety treated
    • PTSD treated
    • Traumas addressed
    • Stress reduction (meditation, breathing, yoga)
  • Plenty of sleep during pregnancy
  • Immediate skin-to-skin contact for 1-2 hours right after birth
  • Screen for traumatic birth
    • Did you worry that you or your baby were at risk of death during the birthing process?
    • Did you worry that you or your baby were at risk of serious injury during the birthing process?
    • Do you feel like your labor was hard and upsetting?
    • Did you feel frightened or helpless during your labor?
  • If had traumatic birth do visuospatial cognitive activity within 6 hr of giving birth (before sleep)
  • Expressive writing—Write in a journal about the birthing experience
  • Relaxation techniques
    • Muscle relaxation
    • Guided imagery
    • Yoga (if medically cleared)
    • Deep breathing
