So Many Methods to Prevent PP-PTSD
Did you know there are several ways to prevent PP-PTSD? Some of them can take place before pregnancy, others during pregnancy, some shortly after birth, and others during the first year following birth.
In this video, I discuss several ways to prevent PP-PTSD from occurring...because it's much easier to prevent than to treat after the fact.
Here is the general outline of various approaches to prevention.
- Good mental health before pregnancy
- Depression treated
- Anxiety treated
- PTSD treated
- Traumas addressed
- Stress reduction (meditation, breathing, yoga)
- Plenty of sleep during pregnancy
- Immediate skin-to-skin contact for 1-2 hours right after birth
- Screen for traumatic birth
- Did you worry that you or your baby were at risk of death during the birthing process?
- Did you worry that you or your baby were at risk of serious injury during the birthing process?
- Do you feel like your labor was hard and upsetting?
- Did you feel frightened or helpless during your labor?
- If had traumatic birth do visuospatial cognitive activity within 6 hr of giving birth (before sleep)
- Expressive writing—Write in a journal about the birthing experience
- Relaxation techniques
- Muscle relaxation
- Guided imagery
- Yoga (if medically cleared)
- Deep breathing
