Research

Occupational therapy is a healthcare profession with a strong emphasis on evidence-based practice. Although the field has been around for over a hundred years, much of the research our profession uses comes from other healthcare, hard science, and social science research. This is because treating function and disability is extremely person-led. Indeed, occupational therapy is holistic and client-centered. This means that protocols are seen as a sometimes necessary "evil"--so to speak.

Yet, as time pushes forward, assessing function is becoming increasingly more possible due to technological advances. The Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education, our educational governing body in the United States, has recognized this shift and prioritized an Occupational Therapy Doctorate (OTD) over the Masters of Occupational Therapy (MOT) with a built-in, final 3-semester focus devoted to students producing programs and research that can move the profession forward in its own right. However, in OT, we have a history of transdisciplinarity and subsequently borrow heavily from other professions. This is likely to continue well into the future. If one head is better than two, how about 3 or 4 or 20?

The point is, we want to provide our clients with the best services we can... no matter where that research originated from. After all, occupation embodies all meaningful things that occupy human's time. That is as big and holistic as it comes! We would be remiss to ignore the research from all of the social, computer, and environmental sciences which inform the context we live in; the varying medical disciplines which provide the context for treating healthcare conditions; the hard sciences (especially kinesiology, anatomy, and physiology) which explain the complex structures and functions of our bodies; and many other fields.

With this in mind, I have created this research list to stand as a place to further ideas, connections, and concepts related to maternal and mental health. If you have any references you would like to share, please email them to me at elle@happybirthdayprogram.com.
