What is Matrescence?

There is a word for what you are going through--matrescence! The transitions that occur during pregnancy and afterward are frequently overwhelming; yet, historically, the medical establishment has been lacking when it comes to transition planning during this time.

Occupational therapists are healthcare providers who focus on holistic care and who are experts in transition planning. An OT (as occupational therapists are frequently called) can help expecting mothers or mothers who have recently delivered to get back to feeling like themselves and make a plan for how to tackle difficulties going forward.

It is important that moms focus on being healthy--both mentally and physically--because an unhealthy mom will have a hard time keeping baby healthy. Remember that when mom is caring for herself, she is caring for her baby.

One main sign that you may be struggling is if you can't quite seem to function like you used to. Perhaps you are having a hard time sleeping at night, enjoying sex, keeping up friendships, or having a difficult time taking care of yourself or your children.

Difficulties functioning are common during the matrescence period (pregnancy, labor and delivery, and soon after the baby is born), but this does not mean that it should be left unaddressed.

If you are struggling in these areas, talk to your your doctor or midwife and explain to them your difficulties. Ask them if they think an occupational therapist might be able to help you.
